Congestive Heart Failure Q & A

by Tiffany Sizemore-Ruiz, D.O., F.A.C.C.

What Is Congestive Heart Failure?

Congestive heart failure occurs when the heart muscle’s ability to pump blood is compromised due to weakness or damage. Factors that cause or complicate congestive heart failure include untreated chronic diseases or conditions like high blood pressure or coronary artery disease (CAD). Congestive heart failure also occurs when the heart muscle tissue is very stiff and inflexible, making it less effective in pumping blood.

What Are the Symptoms of Congestive Heart Failure?

There are a number of symptoms associated with congestive heart failure. Different people may experience different symptoms to different degrees. Some of the symptoms experienced by those with congestive heart failure include:

  • Fatigue
  • Muscle weakness or fatigue
  • Persistent cough
  • Problems exercising or low tolerance for physical exercise
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Swollen ankles and feet
  • Syncope or fainting

How Is Congestive Heart Failure Treated?

Diagnosis is the first step in treating congestive heart failure. It is important to have a complete evaluation of the heart to evaluate both its structure and its functional ability as many conditions can be responsible for the associate symptoms. The evaluation includes a physical exam and a complete patient history including a family medical history to look for risk factors associated with congestive heart failure. Additional cardiac testing is often performed, including electrocardiograms (EKGs), echocardiograms, stress testing and blood tests. Chest x-rays and other imaging exams and tests may also be performed to confirm a diagnosis of congestive heart failure, to explore the extent of the disease, or to rule out other possible causes of the symptoms. In some cases, a coronary angiography, sometimes called heart catheterization, may be performed to look inside the coronary arteries. This minimally invasive procedure provides Dr. Tiffany with additional information about the way the heart is functioning. Once the causes and contributing factors have been identified, treatment typically involves lifestyle changes, different medications to manage symptoms and avoid serious consequences or complications. In some cases, surgery might be recommended to correct structural defects in the heart.
