Echocardiogram Q & A

by Tiffany Sizemore-Ruiz, D.O., F.A.C.C.

What Is an Echocardiogram?

An echocardiogram uses ultrasound to evaluate the structure and function of the heart. Echocardiograms are administered with a hand-held device and require no sedation or anesthesia. Unlike x-rays and CT scans, ultrasounds do not use ionizing radiation and are considered very safe diagnostic tools. Echocardiograms are completed in approximately a half hour, and patients can go home and resume their regular activities immediately afterward. An echocardiogram is often performed as part of a cardiac stress test.

What Are Echocardiograms Used For?

Dr. Tiffany uses echocardiograms for a variety of cardiac issues and concerns. Some of the diagnostic uses include:

  • Assess both the structure and the function, or pumping action, of the heart
  • Assess heart murmurs and arrhythmias
  • Assess the heart following a heart attack
  • Diagnose and manage valve-related problems
  • Diagnose infections involving the heart or the sac around the heart
  • Evaluate symptoms like chest pain and shortness of breath
  • Monitor ongoing treatment for heart disease and heart-related issues so that treatment can be adjusted as needed

How Is an Echocardiogram Performed?

The patient rests on a padded exam table and a water-based gel is applied to the chest over the heart to help conduct the ultrasound waves. A handheld device called a transducer moved over the chest to transmit the ultrasound energy through the skin and chest wall. The technician may need to press the transducer firmly into the skin to obtain clearer images. Patients may be asked to hold their breath for a short period of time to still the lungs so that the clearest possible images can be created. The ultrasound waves “bounce” off the heart, transmitting data back to a computer. Images and video of the heart are created which reveal how well the heart is functioning. Dr. Tiffany uses these images to diagnose cardiac conditions and inform treatment plans.
