Stress Test Q & A

by Tiffany Sizemore-Ruiz, D.O., F.A.C.C.

What Is an Exercise Stress Test?

An exercise stress test is also referred to as an exercise electrocardiogram, treadmill test, graded exercise test, stress ECG, or simply a stress test. This test is used to interpret how the heart responds to exertion, which is an indicator of heart strength and can help to predict how the heart will respond or react to a cardiac episode. The person’s, heart rate and blood pressure are also monitored while performing the activities during a stress test.

Why Do I Need a Stress Test?

A stress test provides Dr. Tiffany with plenty of useful information to understand your cardiovascular health. Some of the information provided during a stress test includes:

  • Identify if there is acceptable blood flow to the heart throughout increasing levels of exercise
  • Detect arrhythmias, or irregular heart rhythms
  • Evaluate the function of heart valves when experiencing issues
  • Assist a patient to create a safe exercise program
  • Assess the success of heart medications being taken when controlling angina and ischemia
  • Evaluate risk of coronary heart disease and the need for additional tests or treatment
  • In people with coronary heart disease, monitor the effectiveness of treatments done to improve blood flow inside the heart vessels

Are There Different Types of Stress Tests?

Dr. Tiffany may use a variety of stress tests to measure your cardiovascular health. There are several types of stress tests used including:

  • Treadmill stress test: When the patient has a normal ECG and no difficulty walking, this test monitors a patient when walking on a treadmill to evaluate his or her heart’s response to varying degrees of exertion. The test also shows if the patient develops any chest pains or fluctuations in the ECG. This can suggest that the heart is not receiving an adequate blood supply.
  • Nuclear stress test: This test identifies which areas of the heart are not functioning correctly. A small amount of a radioactive substance is injected into the blood. Then Dr. Tiffany uses a special camera to view the substance as it moves through the body, producing a clear picture of the cardiovascular system. These images will be captured both at rest and following an exercise test. This can detect an area of the heart with has a decreased blood supply
  • Dobutamine or Adenosine Stress Test: This test is used when a person is unable to exercise to elevate the heart rate. A medication is provided to make the heart respond as if the patient were being active.
